Women's and Children's Hospital
Medical Office Building
Buffalo, NY

Architect: Architectural Resources

The new development of a Medical Office Building for the Women’s and Children’s Hospital on Bryant Street provided an opportunity to create a much needed Street Scape for the neighborhood and the hospital campus.

The first floor of the Office Building is a glass gallery wall, allowing pedestrians a view into the gallery hall from the outdoor seating area. We felt the plant materials in the area needed to be inviting but also provide enough of a shield for people to feel comfortable sitting so close to the city sidewalk.

By offsetting the benches, we were able to create seating nooks that allowed for some people to meet in small groups, while others could sit independently without feeling isolated.

Most importantly to the plan was the concept of using the tear dropped planters as rain water collection areas for both surface run-off as well as introducing the idea of directing rain water leaders from the building directly to the planters as well as a planting strip along the curb that uses structural soil and permeable pavers.
