South Terrace Spiral Garden
Hospicare Residence Ithaca, NY Landscape Architect: Paula Horrigan Landscape Architect One of the six gardens on the property, this garden was designed to be the most active space of the facility. The garden is highly tactile and sensory, allowing close interaction with the natural world. The garden acts as the origin of the facility, taking advantage of the warm southern sun to create a unique garden, not only for residents and families, but for staff and nurses. Fossils on the site are plentiful. Poetic sculpture at the origin of the spiral evokes the natural features of the site and asks us to contemplate something larger than ourselves. While a simple color palate was chosen, it is the fragrance and texture in the garden that make it inviting. Lavenders, sage, lamb’s ear and purple birch provide soothing smells, soft touches and dappled light. |
