Private Residence
Clarence Center, NY Because of our traditional definitions of “front yard” and “back yard” this large corner lot in Clarence Center was greatly underused. As an anniversary present to each other, the homeowners asked us to develop a plan to better utilize the yard, and to create a variety of spaces for entertaining and quietly enjoying the garden. By utilizing the underused side yard, the garden area greatly increases in size. A meandering walking path together with a retaining wall and seating nook create a quiet space for sitting and chatting. The traditional definition of “driveway” is also reconsidered, as pavers replace asphalt as the driving surface. The paver area then becomes an extended patio during the summer season with a feature arbor and pergola. The middle space between the patio and the secluded nook becomes a traditional “knot garden” reflecting the family’s heritage as well as strengthening the side yard entry for the homeowners and guests. |
